throh and sawk are puns on throw and sock. throh is a judoka pokemon, based on a martial art centred around grappling and throwing your opponent. sock is a karateka inspired pokemon, based on an art which is more centred around kicks and punches. when you punch someone it's sometimes referred to as "socking" them, hence the joke
