Steelix is not bad or getting worse per se...it's just hard to find a reason to use it over other Steel types. It has competition from Metagross, Aggron, Ferrothorn, Skarmory, Lucario, Excadrill, Magearna, etc.

Yeah, it's OK. No good physical ground move to take advantage of it, though, which hurts. Also, iron head only hits about as hard as heavy slam most of the time; iron tail is the moneymaker (75% of the time). I also used special SF LO steelix for a while. It was fun and surprisingly not just a total meme like le ebin specs garchomp. Flash cannon, earth power, dark pulse, and something else. Caught people off guard at least.

I used AV sheer force steelix in XY on the best OU team I've ever built. It was just OK. Invest in a good chunk of spdef or a lot of special attacks you'd think AV would let you eat (mega gard's focus blast is the only one that immediately comes to mind).

Dark and Psychic are in the same boat. Their weaknesses really became amplified from gen 4-6.

For Psychics: Uturn, Sucker Punch, Pursuit, Shadow Sneak are staples in the metagame

For Darks: Fighting and Fairy are everywhere and the U-Turn weakness sucks.

worked pretty well in gen 2 as an electric counter, since most don't run hp water anymore these days.

Beats non fire blast snorlax 1v1, is a good mid game skarm check for spike based teams, and has a strong explosion to kill anything that doesn't resist basically.

Sucks vs full stall and offense with champ/marowak though.

Steelix is actually my favourite pokemon.

Ever since it first appeared in the Jasmine fight in G/S/C I always wanted to use it on my team.

It's definitely not the best Ground/Steel type out there and it really wishes it had kept Onix's speed, but in-game this thing can get through most battles fine.

I think people automatically think of Steelix as "press special attack to kill it", but that ignores it's potential to check most teams with Stealth Rock, Toxic, Heavy Slam and Earthquake.

Three solid abilities too, allowing it to be used in different ways.

I know Mega Aggron and (offensively) Excadrill do what it does better, but honestly Steelix has pulled through in battles more times that I can count.

If you think Steelix has it rough, look at Forretress. Poor guy has had to compete first with Scizor in Gen 2, then Escavalier, Durant and Genesect in Gen 5. Ferrothorn also marks stiff competition with arguably better resistances, moves and ability. The bug nerf with fairies hurt too, but he doesn't even have u-turn to abuse. Poor guy :(

Steel/Bug is not a role. Forretress and Scizor do not even remotely do the same job. Forretress sets Spikes, spins, explodes, and is an emergency check against physical attackers. Cloyster does the same ting, with some notable differences. Also, Scizor is not very good in GSC. Saying Forretress competes with Scizor is as ridiculous as saying Cloyster competes with Lapras or Dewgong.

Now that game freak have opened the door to all sorts of buffs and nerfs, I'm hoping that mega steelix has a chance to get magnet pull.

I always loved Onix as well. Would be great if its attack was buffed to be higher than pidgey's. The thing should really have at least 100 base attack.
