In Smash, only recently relevant characters get in except for the one designated retro rep (i.e. G&W, ROB, Duck Hunt) and the ultra-iconic, even-your-mom-knows-who-this is third party reps (Mega Man, Pac Man, Cloud), and of course the Smash ballot exception Bayonetta who was voted in.

All the original Sm4sh newcomers were characters who became famous for games released between Brawls' development (2007) and Sm4sh's development.

Palutena (Kid Icarus Uprising)

Robin/Lucina
etc.

So if any new characters are going to be added, they definitely won't be who's like Isaac or K. Rool. It'll be a recent character, like a Gen 7 Pokemon for sure considering the success and popularity of Sun/Moon
