Nothing. They may not be that great as far as competitive viability goes (though Sheer Force Gatr is actually pretty good), but they easily have the best designs of any group of starters

Typhlosion doesn't really either. Scarf Eruption isn't nearly good enough for OU and it doesn't have anything else.

Feraligator isn't too shabby. Not prominent OU threat level but it was serviceable last gen.

The Gen 2 starters are the blandest. They're just real life things with a different color and one or two things stacked on them. No, really:
>meganium is just a green dinosaur with a giant flower and antennae
>typhlosion is just a yellow human with some fire and pointed ears
>feraligatr is just a blue alligator with tall, pointy scales
All the starters can be their own monsters apart of the real thing, and if they were real they could be their own animals. But the Gen 2 starters are so much bland. Charizard is just an orange dragon with some fire but that's ok since dragons aren't real.
Their stats and movepools are shit too, maaaaybe Feraligatr has a decent-ish movepool but even then that's stretching it.

Eruption Typhlosion is a meme. It's really not good. Team preview let's your opponent know from a mile away what you're planning, it gets wrecked by priority and gets wrecked by literally all the entry hazards. When it gets below like 75%HP it's just a (rather shitty) mono fire type. Furthermore, its speed is good but not great, and so is its special attack. So with Scarf you lose the firepower it desperately needs and with Specs you lose the ability to outspeed key threats.

Typhlosion is literally just Charizard with less coverage, Meganium has almost negative offence, a serious case of 4 MSS, and Johto was set up against it (Chuck's Poliwrath, and Will's Slowbro are literally the only two notable pokemon in the entire game up to Kanto that Meganium has an advantage against, while Johto is fucking crawling with antigrass pokemon. Gatr fucking sucked until gen 4, when the split blessed it, then won the lottery with HAs.
