252/252/4 is generally just laziness, and not autistic enough. Outside of speed, no stat should ever really be 252. There is always a point at which you have garunteed a certain hit KO or survival from a particular attack you are expecting. 252/252/4 is only for if you only sort of know what you are doing, or just don't care and want to hurry up and finish.
Technically, it's sub-optimal, but it's also good enough.
