EUfag here, its so hard to find faceplates and I'm slowly regretting my choice to get the smol one.

That being said, I've got an awesome MH4 faceplate, extended battery (it fucks with the battery meter and stops you from using bottom faceplates, but it quadruples the battery life) and I've torn off the nipple and put a PSP pad on instead.

It's a second analog stick introduced in the newest iteration of the 3DS.
Unmodified, it's pretty bad. It doesn't actually move (or at least, you can't feel it move) so there's no feedback outside of what you can see in-game. To make things even worse, it has no grip so using it for more than 20 minutes makes it slick as fuck and basically unusable. Lots of people have been replacing them with the PSP 1000 pad, myself included.
It's also very unused, I can only think of a handful of games that actually use them and most of them just treat it as another d-pad (no analog controls, because it's impossible to use).

I really like the look of pic related (EU/UK only, looks like) and now's the best time to buy it, I guess. It'll suck saying good bye to my US NNID, but with CFW being a real thing now, I guess I can deal with it. My save data will still work with US .cias I guess.

Should I stay with an N3DS XL or go for a smaller screen size w/face plates? Is the N3DS XL more powerful compared to the N3DS? If the only difference is only the screen size, I may downsize. Decisions, decisions.

The only practical difference is the screen and stylus size, aesthetics and ergonomics aside.
The XL is only actually a tiny bit bigger, with a much better screen/surface ratio.
The small stylus on the new 3DS is also abysmal.

As someone who has the small version, get the XL.
