You had to go find Wulfric in the Pokemon Village I don't know if that counts as doing something but pretty much only him and Korrina appear outside their gyms, and Clemont I guess but you meet him right outside the gym and then he goes right back inside.

I guess Clemont also gave Shauna that puzzlebox thing she uses to break into the room with Xerneas/Yveltal at the end but that's just something they offhandedly namedrop him about so I'm gonna file that under "Things Shauna did".

Forreal though, after every gym leader in Gen5 had a personality and a job outside of gym leading and actually helped fight the evil team, Gen6 felt like such a huge step backwards.

Wally and Cynthia are the only tree only trainers. Wally was the battle intro model from ORAS from the looks of it and Cynthia's is going to be reused in the DP remakes.

Another gym leader I forgot existed. At least the grass guy was a little easy to remember since he was so easy to just steamroll, same with Wulfric. The anime/manga is the only reason I remember characters like Viola, Grant, Clemont, Korrina and Wulfric. Without it, I'd be hard pressed to remember a single leader.

Same with Grimsley. They just show up for no reason at all and then proceed to fuck off. I think it'd be neater to see someone in Grimsley's place that people cared more about. I think people would've been more excited to see Wally or Cynthia give them something that the one Unovan Elite 4 guy.
