Meganium's design is okay, but it's shit to play with. Can't do anything.
Gatr is good design-wise and not weak, but that is after Physical/Special split. Before that, it was shit.

There is literally no reason to play gold since HG is superior, while emerald is better than ORAS instead, so you should play emerald.

Kanto postgame is overrated, go with Emerald

Emerald is probably the oldest pokemon game you could consider "modern", in a sense. As much as I love gen 2, there's some wonky ass problems with GSC, like the level scaling in general and some weird pokemon distribution. Seriously, why aren't Misdreavus, Houndour, Murkrow, and Slugma available in fucking Johto? It's fucking dumb. Slugma would be a great pokemon to get earlier on, too.

That being said, I'd start with Gold because it's always easier going forwards as opposed to backwards. Better music, too.
