Gladion's "arc" makes him a more enjoyable rival than the assholes and the friendly ones. I haven't played B2W2 so I can't compare him to Hugh, but I like him more than everyone else save maybe Blue just out of nostalgia. The big issue with Gladion is he doesn't get enough screentime, and that also made him storming Aether with you weaker than it could have been because it doesn't feel like he has any reason to put so much faith in you and Hau.

All of that applies to Barry and Cheren except the last two. As the anon pointed out, the last two only happen in his first encounter. In the other cases, they had other assholey traits, such as Cheren's overall "annoyed with everything" attitude.

I wasn't trying to argue that Blue is the only rude rival, just that he is in fact actually a jackass. It feels like contrarian Blue fans just latched onto the realization that they could attribute all the Blue memes to anime shitters despite it not really being the case.

Also, he always gloats when he wins, though how he reacts when you beat him changes as you progress. He never stops talking down to you and says it's not fair that you beat him right after he became champion.

Barry is pretty domineering but doesn't put the player down as much as Blue, and Cheren has a superiority complex but isn't as obnoxious, he acts annoyed with the other characters. They all have their own traits, which one you find most irritating to deal with personally will vary, I find the manner in which Blue antagonizes the player more entertaining than the others.
