As cancer as it may sound, Fusion would be a likely candidate. It could be limited distribution-wise as only specific pairs of Pokemon can fuse. The resulting fusion would gain +100 stats just like a Mega would. And the "sacrifice" for having a fusion would, instead of giving up an item slot in the case of Megas and Z-Moves, the pokemon that's currently battling becomes the fusion, and the other participant in your party is no longer present as the pokemon are fused together, giving up a party member for the rest of the battle.

Have the "ultra uber legendary" that showcases this feature be Complete Kyurem, which is when you fuse Black/White Kyurem with Reshiram/Zekrom respectively.
