The Rocket Gang somehow manages to give them a report that smooths things over. However, they realize they can't just continue on like this, and decide to aim for getting a new Pokémon.

>Satoshi's classmate Mao tells him that the Pancake Race will soon take place. This is a race where Trainers and Pokémon work together to carry pancakes stacked up on a plate to the goal as fast as they can without the stack collapsing. Satoshi gets really interested and enters the Pancake Race together with Pikachu.

SM14 - The Fruit of Courage: Lilie and Rokon! (Feb 9th)

Against Wulfric was just the final nail in the coffin since he went into the battle desperate to win to prove himself to Shota and because of this lost and blamed himself.

And since when does Ash care about losing to previous battled trainers? He bounces back from his losses stronger than ever, and encouraging them to become stronger themselves. Ash got upset because he and Greninja were supposed to help each other reach those heights together, and he was failing Greninja. It wasn't losing the battles, it was failing Greninja because he couldn't take the transformation, causing the two of them to lose. That's where the whole "I, the trainer, have to become stronger" idea came from in the first place. He talks about training himself alongside his Pokemon after he loses to Alan and we see him doing this training when he meets Diantha again. Then he hears that Shota has outpaced him, and after losing to both Diantha and Alan in the same way, he tries to show off to Shota so that he can still be the master that everyone sees him as, and he fucks it up. Then he goes on til against Wulfric and loses, with everyone noticing his change in attitude (Him shoving his jacket at Serena wasn't a cute Amour scene, it was a hint that Ash wasn't himself; he was already getting rough with Serena). It's only after Serena knocks some sense into him that he realizes he was doing it wrong, and it's only after he and Greninja save the Spewpa that he realizes what he needed to do instead. Watch the fucking show next time so people don't have to spoonfeed you.

It's the first time that it was ever his fault directly, though. Every other time (Blaze, mostly) the fault could be shouldered by the Pokemon unable to handle their own power, or growing arrogant and prideful after they evolved, or it was something outside his control (Sceptile getting rejected by that Meganium). In THIS case, Ash is the one who passes out during his battles, not Greninja. Greninja can take the transformation, and Ash cannot. That is what causes the spiral to start; a failure on Ash's part that is his and his alone.

I was taking the moral lesson angle. In particular, the idea that going with Yashio by herself and not having a romantic closure with Ash would NOT be a lesson that Japan would need kids to be learning.
