I'm pretty sure that regardless of what time it appears in the background, the time in a battle remains the same as when you enter it. When chaining eevees I would find espeons at night if I started the battle during tge day and vice versa.

I was actually trying to catch Corsola since I had accidentally killed one I fished up. Took me forever, finally got one to bite, used brick break and it must have had 2 or 3 hp left.

That weird thing showed up when it called for help, killed the goddamn corsola so I caught it instead. Took me forever to find another one.

As did I. Carbink is common enough in PokéPelago that after enough choose not to stay you're eventually going to get pissed off and hunt one down the old fashioned way. Or just do that anyway since they're just as common in this game's few caves.

They hint that they show up to eat the coral pokemon. With that cut scene where you find to injured corals sitting around outsit the lab. Then I saw one a trainer used and could tell where they spawned. I found it on a blind play though.

Actually there's this one guy doing a play through. He knew that bubbling fishing spots had higher encounters for rarer Pokemon, and he had seen a Marinie in a trainer battle before.
Earlier he had a Sableye come as an SOS from a Carbink and attack it. Then when he did that little side quest with the hurt. Corsola he learned that Marinie attacked them.
Using all this (and maybe looking for what location Marinies were found) he deduced that Marinie might come to attack Corsola and he found one.
Not only all that, but he was doing a nuzlocke with the special rule that he only catches the first Gen 7 Pokemon he encounters so he was able to get it.

When I was playing as a child, I had that habit where I would change tiles everytime I fished something, and would then fish in every single tile on that map until I found what I needed - or at least on that map. It came as a sort of game since the Pokémon I was searching for seemed to be so rare.

I mean, you can technically find all of the SM pokemon listed above, you just need luck and have to use WT.

I found mareanie by accident during my blind playthrough. Corsola is one of my favorite pokemon (im a waterfag) so as soon as I got the fishing rod from Lana I doubled back to Kukui's lab because I had seen corsola on the beach there and just assumed that I'd be able to catch one for my team. I saw the bubbles around the fishing spot and at the time I was under the impression that the bubbles were just the animation of a fishing spot. Anyway I reeled in a corsola on my first try (i figured since its not a very good pokemon, they were common) then as I was lowering it's health to catch it, it called for help. Mareanie showed up and I was so confused as to what the fuck was going on because I hadnt seen the SOS mechanic outside of Totem battles. It ended up killing the corsola I was trying to catch so I caught it instead. Then i tried fishing there again (bubbles gone) for a corsola for about 20 minutes before I gave up and then fell in love with Mareanie.

tl;dr

its more likely than you'd think, though I realize now that I was somewhat lucky.
