Which region is the best design-wise?

The title sums it up. In your opinion, which rrguon was designed the best? Disregarding nostalgia, of course.

Some factors to think about include:
>Theming of the region, like how Kanto is very rural and Johto is very Japanese
>Regional dex, how diverse the selection is and etc

Overall, I don't think I can decide.
However:
Hoenn is my favorite design-wise.
Unova felt fresh with the available pokemon (I was a big fan of a brand-new set before being able to see anything from older gens)
Sinnoh felt most like an adventure to me, despite being my least-favorite games.
Kanto or Johto have the best layout, I feel.

Platinum Sinnoh would be 10/10 if the cities had more grass IMO, Hoenn would be my second choice because it offers tons of different biomes and some of the most beautiful towns in the franchise (yeah yeah, water routes, get over it at least you can skip that with dive)

Rock Climb (Onland Waterfall)

Cycling road rehashed from Kanto and Hoenn, Solaceon Ruins rehashed Ruins of Alph from Johto etc

Almost all of the caves in the region (there's a lot of them) recycle the same graphics and music and aren't distinguishable from one another.

The Snow and Marsh routes were a pain to traverse.

The whole route is covered in snow, meaning that it is impossible to ride a bicycle. In some places, the snow is so deep that it cannot be run through and as a result of the snow.

Route 212
A marsh tile is a special tile introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. When the player walks on these tiles, they may become stuck in an unseen hole and unable to move.

At least flash, defog and waterfall aren't required for 90% of the game, rock climbing becomes less obnoxious after marking the 4-5 optional locations where you need it and saving the last usage for sunnyshore and the victory road

I give you the victory road, Hoenn had the same bullshit and i still hate needing to box one of my main pokémon to carry a slave around

Don't forget Snowpoint being as empty as a skyrim city, it wasn't even "comfy" empty, just empty, they could have at least given it unique houses to match that "disconnected with the outside world" vibe

The Sinnoh games are some of the ugliest in the franchise. It's amazing how much HGSS and BW/BW2 improved over them in terms of visuals.

Johto is the best thematically and conceptually, albeit with a poor representation. However, that downside is strictly due to restrictions in both 4th and 2nd generation. 2nd gen due to technical issues of the time, and 4th for being a direct remake.

Regional dex is hard to criticize as well, for it's only the 2nd generation.

Unova is an upside down version of Johto, and therefore practically equal. By that I mean the duality of modern life and a traditional one.

I didn't even notice when I first played because it's absolutely no different from how most of the other games played out. It doesn't matter if I'm going around one big loop or a big squiggly overlapping line, the progression is the same.
Personally I really liked Unova's suburban feel. It felt less like going out and exploring the untamed wilds untouched by people and more like exploring the woods behind your house. Definitely gave it a unique vibe.

Design can refer to the game and mechanical design as well, not just the visual design. HMs are how you traverse the region. The Pokemon distribution make up the inhabitats and the wildlife. They are both important to discuss when talking about the overall region design, like how enemies and obstacles can be brought up when discussing level design in a platformer.

Gen 5 came later, and gen 4 may have been Gamefreak's first attempt at a game on a polygon-capable console, but 3D games had existed for years upon years. Pokemon games, albeit not made by Gamefreak, had already been released in full 3D. Diamond and Pearl are embarassing. "it was gamefreak's first try" is a shit excuse when they consistently fuck things up the first time even though these things have been common practice for other developers and in other series for years and it just took gamefreak eons to bother.
