Just because Protean was the one getting the attention, people seem to forget that regular Greninja was still really good.
Then you factor in the Water Shuriken buff, and how Ash-Greninja is essentially a Mega that can hold an item, it was obvious.

I was thinking it was going to be just cute bait myself. You know, things like Munna made to sell toys that end up basically forgotten by the next gen.

Then I saw the ability and knew shit was gonna get real. That thing replaced my started. So awesome!

Also Stufful/Bewear surprised me. The type coverage it can have plus good strength messes with so many mons it's amazing. It's far from perfect (dies before Mimicyu!) but I have used it as a dragon slayer with great success.
