I like gen 3 the most because it seemed very polished compared to 1 and 2, and starting with gen 4 I have some serious gripes with the pokemon franchise.

(Gen 4 was the first game where I got pissed off that my hand was being held throughout the game and I felt like the NPCs really start treating you as a child which I don't feel when replaying gens 1-3)

Also gen 3 had pokemon colluseum and XD which were actually pretty good games.

I actually don't like Hoenn, I don't like it's dex, I don't like a majority of it's new Pokemon, I don't like any of the games that feature it outside of Emerald which is the only game to make it any fun in my opinion.

Because Hoenn. Too much water aside, there's lots to explore, in contrast to most games where they just handhold you from point A to point B. Hoenn felt like an adventure I could make my own.

This. Hoenn dex is so dreadfully boring. There aren't many pokemon in it that stand out either negatively or positively, though there are more so for the former.
I'd also add that the overworld sprites were ugly, and the exclusion of a night/day cycle really killed my vibe.

That being said, I don't think it's the worst gen. Just the most mediocre.

This is pretty accurate to how I feel, it's also probably the reason why I never finished ORAS since I never enjoyed much of Gen 3 and only found Emerald "alright" for the most part. I remember having such a hard time picking a good fire type when I didn't pick Torchic and not liking my options outside of Ninetales, it's probably my least favorite regional dex in the series.

I agree so much with these posts. It was really an adventure, no handholding, plenty of exploration and it felt like the Pokémon series were still strongly improving with each new addition. Gen 4 I was a bit disappointed, but it was still nice to play. Starting from gen 5 the handholding, linear progress and pussification was too much for me to be satisfied.

I was born in 90, and for some reason I just really don't find the original 4 gens all too interesting. I absolutely loved BW/BW2, but nothing ever really came close to that for me.

Hoen was just "okay." Like it was pretty underwhelming and it had a really "safe" feeling about it.

This. When I first started playing Pokémon I was always curious about what was across areas with pools of water. When you start in Pallet Town there's water right down there and you think "what's beyond that?". So then, when you get Surf, all of these areas are suddenly open to you and it really gives a good sense of exploration. It's also why I loved gen 2 because once you get Surf you get check out those nooks and crannies that were hidden from you previously. Hoenn took this and ran with it really well and that's what's always stuck with me.

suddenly the pkmn sprites were replaced too. they all look different. I'm actually more interested in Prism because I appreciate the style a bit more. Emerald always looked a bit too clean. also, the Safari Zone there is dogshit.

Gen 3 was my least favourite until gen 7 came along. Not allowing trade with past generations and adding natures that could fuck up your pokemon ruined it for me. After finishing the game, I just felt really disappointed by it.

I'm talking about shit like Torkoal, the two Clamperl evolutions I can't even remember, Fucking Luvdisc, and a few others. But it's not that I hate the Hoenn dex, it's just that I don't care about them as much as other regional dexes. Hoenn just doesn't have many strong standout designs in my opinion.
