The battle animation in this episode was fucking amazing, so there's that at least.

Also, people should not expect super hype and great battles early on in the series. It's hard for battles to get good when Ash is running around with base stage starters knowing Tackle. This is a problem each and every series has had and not unique to SM.

When was the first truly great battle in XY? It really wasn't until Clemont's gym... and it took a year to get there.

The battle today wasn't nearly as good as the first few battles of XY. Rowlet ended up using a strategy that's Ash didn't even think of and it was just a simple *teleports behind you*. Whereas in every single one of the first few battles in XY, including the wild ones (I.e. fletchling) Ash was still using strategy.

Ash VS Tapu Koko wasn't even good either. It was only because of Ash using a Z-Move for his first time that anyone got excited. And it ended up breaking anyway.

The battles in SM have just been bad. There's no tension or strategy or any sort of unorthodox battle styles. Of course the battle against Hala will be like that but think about it. If the Kahuna battles are the only battles to really look forward to, and Ash has to go through three more trials AND filler before he gets to the next one, how long exactly can you last before you just say fuck it and not care about the series until something hype happens?
