Gamefreak literally said that they didn't make new Megas because they explicitly wanted to focus on Z-Moves. Expect more gimmick Pokemon games in the future where every gen has its own hook

Because the new pattern for Pokemon games is to shit out flashy gimmicks and drop them quickly for the next flashy gimmick
