What part of this is "Ground"?

It's made of ground

What part of any of the Gen 1 rock types is Ground really? I mean maybe the Rhyhorn line because they drill or whatever but Ground seems pretty tacked on to Geodude, Onix and the Nidos

Good enough for me, but it probably should have been pure Rock. Roggenrola is basically a "fixed" Geodude (pure Rock, no DBZ eyes, keeps the living rock theme instead of turning into a turtle).

Diglett and Onix are all about digging. They make perfect sense as Ground.

The Nidos are poison, not rock. And Aerodactyl, Kabutops and Omastar get on okay without ground.

Nidoking's ground comes from his inspiration Baragon.

Baragon was a kaiju (who got later brought into a Godzilla movie, G.M.K.) who could dig underground. He fought Frankenstein this one time and it was cool.

This kaiju basis is also why he goes into the "Monster" breeding group and has access to surf.

Gamefreak didn't think out their type distributions very well.

The worst part of the majority of Rock types also being Ground types is the double weakness from Water.
