So, what is exactly is Ash-Greninja. A synchro evolution, a fusion, a burst form...? Or is it something else completely? Cause it's not a Greninja with Battle Bond. Ash and Greninja didn't have to K.O someone to achieve the form. Battle Bond's only canon to the games.

It's a battle bond greninja abilities don't work in the same way as the games.
It's trAsh.

The end of XYZ hints it being related to Zygarde's powers, but as those itself aren't really explored in the games or anime the transformation that some Greninja's can do won't be explained

The TL;DR is that Ash-Greninja is the result of Ash's particular Greninja being a special snowflake and having secret, untapped powers. It's only because Ash is the kinda guy he is that he was able to unlock the power Greninja had inside, bringing out the Ash-Greninja transformation.
There's a bit of lore, as well, that hints that this form of Greninja has appeared in the past, and that it's purpose is to protect and save those around it (as >>31192776 was talking about, Ash-Greninja can sense negative energy caused by Team Flare's schemes, and this was foreshadowed in the Ninja Village where the form is hinted to exist).
>>31192256
He's a plot device so Ash could have an all Gen 6 team while also being able to have (something like) a Mega.
>Yajima wanted to make the bond between Satoshi and Gekkouga a major part of the story, but felt it would be difficult to do so if it had to remain a Gekkouga, so he went to Game Freak, and they came up with the idea of a synchro transformation. It was put in Sun/Moon afterwards, but was created during this discussion between anime staff and GF.

And then it ended as a glorified gardener. Bravo.
>>31192866
Nail on the head right here. He can compete with Megas without having to bring one of his old mons back
Ash Greninja is what happens when you fuck your pokemon to the next level.
>>31192829
>Ash's particular Greninja being a special snowflake and having secret, untapped powers.
Ash-Greninja was a thing before Ash was even born canonically.
>>31195279
Exactly; a special snowflake with secret, untapped powers that appears every 1000 years or so.
Animu.
>>31192256
A horribly implemented deviantart tier plot device in the anime and a fucking wasted concept with all types of potential in the games
Oh and a horrifying monstrosity of a design due to the red and black sloppily thrown in there
In short an even bigger mistake than all of us

>Synchro
Can I prevent with Solemn Strike?
>>31195587
This is why Ash could never use Pendulum. He would Pendulum 5 into a Solemn and fuck himself over for the rest of the fight.
>So, what is exactly is Ash-Greninja
Cancer
I don't know, but at least it doesn't appear anymore in the anime, that's something.
>>31196141
Pretty much this.

>The only Gen VI pokemon that had a Mega was Diancie
Holy crap, i had never even thought of that. It actually does make perfect sense. I'm not even kidding here, i actually warmed up to the concept as soon as i realized it.

>Gen 8
>New held item: Consumed only if the enemy mega-evolves, cancels the mega evo and disables it until switched
r8
I wouldn't mind if they changed mega evolutions to being hidden abilities instead of item related, and it never really seemed fair that the Kalos starters didn't get mega forms in the game that introduced them. I still think it's grotesque though
