Black is African specific in the way that every light-skinned Asian person isn't labeled White. It causes less cofusion overall but superficially lumps people into color groups that are fairly inaccurate. Imagine calling Asian people the Yellow people in a diverse public setting and having it be accepted.

This extends to Brown and Red people as well. Pretty fucking unusual we still say Black and White to this day. Maybe it has to do with the connotations of implicit contrast that grants favor, otherwise it just sounds inaccurate and dated

If we are going by NPC parents then Calem and Serena are black. The player character of gen 6 had a pale mother and the child could be pale or brown. The mother in gen 7 is brown and can have a pale or dark child. They use random NPCs for parents, to save money.
