The consensus here is that SM is comfy/cute but kind of lackluster/boring compared to XY so far. People feel kind of lukewarm towards SM as a result but most of them are willing to give it a chance to kick into full gear before judging it fully. Ash is competent as a battler but so far there hasn't been much battling to speak of. There will be a fair amount of it in the next two weeks, thankfully.

We do get a lot of shitposters who proclaim SM to already be worse than BW or proclaim "XYfags" to be ruining the thread for them, though. Be wary of them.

It's possible. Honestly I think that Casey was based on the Gold/Silver female protagonist. Initially I thought she would have replaced Misty, but now I'm not so sure that's the case, since Misty had Togepi and all. Its likely because OS, AG and DP were treated as one big continuity. After that the writers felt most of the original fans probably outgrew the anime so they started making each saga feel more standalone after that. Hence why Ash's progression felt natural for the first 3 series, and now it changes randomly each time a new saga begins.

One thing DP did do though, was that it established relative power levels a lot more clearly. Paul got absolutely wrecked when he challenged Cynthia and so did Ash anytime he challenged an E4. XY was a lot more blurry with those lines because you had Alain being able to beat an E4 yet they wanted the audience to also think Ash was on equal enough footing with him to be considered a relevant rival.

I know. I didn't say the other seasons were any better, but at least then I wasn't watching expecting something. I basically just watched for Dawn. I think a lot of people did.
