True, but it is still reliable competition no other type has an equivalent for. With your Fire or Grass type, you can always be confident you have one of the best options for that type available to you. Water, you have to accept that Gyarados is not only available, but probably better.

You say that like having more than one Water-type on your team is a bad thing. They're just generally very solid types that reliable early in the game and stay good the entire way through.

Plus, getting Ice Beam to cover your bases (and other assorted Ice-type moves early on) is very useful. I do agree with you in that Gyarados tends to be better but honestly the games are easy enough that it's generally not an issue and when it is the Grass-type starter tends to be the inferior choice anyway.
