Transferring back and forth seems like it shouldn't happen. Every new game adds new data to the pokemon files (memories, extra balls, etc) so that moving them forward makes sense, but moving them backwards would either destroy data or you have to go back and reengineer 4 generations of games to ensure compatibility. Legality of sets has broadly expanded, so allowing back and forth transfers opens up a lot of options not possible in previous games (and if you want that, why not just make them in the later games?)

Asking for this feature is just going to make it less likely we'll get anything. Eshop versions that you can move pokemon up from is good enough (and why only get 3+? We're actually getting gen 1 compatibility).

Cool idea, but of course not true. The Nintendo Switch is however receiving Virtual Console Versions of Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Poke Bank will be the way to transfer Pokemon from the 3ds to the Switch.

The Wii U is already great for this, if the Switch had native multiplayer for all the Pokémon games it would be even better.

Frankly, this is the only reason I would buy a handheld for Pokemon.
I would love to move through the generations in a way I wasn't able to growing up. Right now emulating is the only way I can replay the classics, and it's not satisfying because I can't keep, battle, and move the Pokemon I catch forward with every generation (RBY on the VC doesn't count and I don't want to start with what, BW? Is that the oldest that can trade upwards?)
If the Switch did OP pic I'd stop emulating.
