And Shelmet doesn't seem to inherit anything from Karrablast when it evolves into Accelgor, while still retaining head details that are recognizable from Shelmet's puckered face.

Yes, you factually need Karrablast, and should know that it exists, but it visually contributes the least to either evolution, so it's easily forgotten.
