That's because the game starts you out with some really shitty pokemon especially since in nuzlocke you have to go with the first thing you get and a lot of the better pokemon have low encounters or are through SOS.

The whole point of doing nuzlocke is restricting yourself so the game can have some type of challenge, if you're just playing normally then S&M is no effort at all.

SM has a very odd level curve. Basically the first three islands are very easy then (even with the exp share, unless you grind a lot) the fourth island mashes the levels upwards and by the end, the E4 will have trainers with equal or higher levels than the player. Not hard as long as the "switch after KOing an enemy" is set to on though.
