I like Darksilvania's designs I just feel they're sometimes a bit too complicated for Pokemon, but at the same time I can't think of what details I'd take away to make them more Pokemon-y.

It's not the details as much as the proportions of the bodies. I've always found his mons to be very Spectrobe-ish, even a bit like Digimons. They need to be more cartoonish in that sense.

Doesn't really look like a Pokemon. I usually slam that kind of comment because "what a Pokemon looks like" has only broadened over the years, but I dunno. It's not like it looks like a Digimon or a Yokai, it just looks like some other low rent monster catching game. The premise is fine, though. Not sure why it's dark. Pokemon based on inanimate objects being ghost-type feels like a copout at this point, but it might make more sense. Or maybe fairy.

This artist's stuff doesn't jump out to me as "that's a Pokemon", but that might just be their artstyle. Rendered differently I think they'd fit in pretty well. The quoted evo in particular though smacks of "it's bigger now", which isn't something I usually criticize, but in this case I think it stands out a lot. It just looks like the first one started working out. Even the fur pattern is negligibly different.

I think the main issue I take with Darksilvania's designs is that a lot of them have seams all over them. If there's more than one colour on the design then there always seems to be an obvious seam separating them.
It works on things like the design in the OP and the segmented Bug-types, but on other designs it makes them look like toys.

Sage is like Gen 2. The good designs are absolutely fantastic, whereas the bad designs are absolutely abysmal. High highs and low lows, and everything that isn't one of those is just kind of boring.
If the entire dex lived up to the quality of things like Flairees, Trenchula and Monkezuma then it'd be fantastic, but unfortunately things like Hurricanine and the Larvabidae family hold it back.

I was just giving a few examples, but yeah, I'd count Galaxagos among the good ones. Its visual design is detailed without being cluttered, the concept is solid, it's very unique from a gameplay perspective, and the name flows nicely. Good Fakemon in just about every aspect.

I just found a handful of these that I drew years ago, and a couple wound up using ideas that got incorporated into actual Pokemon that were designed later. There's a ghost/fire one based on a lantern, the grass starter was a leafy snake, a ghost/water based on jellyfish, and a 2-stage ice fox. Most of them are garbage, but here's a Muay Thai based dark/fighting dude who uses knees, elbows, and headbutts to do damage.

I had a plan originally to make it the third stage of the region's pseudolegendary. The first stage would have two separate faces. The second would have them sort of squished together with three eyes, with the middle eye being both the right mask's left eye and the left mask's right eye. Then in the last stage, both masks are merged. The fluff would be about how it's two opposing personalities learning to cooperate.

You're right though, still probably too complex. Design's trying to do too many things at once. back to the drawing board.

That's interesting. I guess if they only had red/blue/yellow to look at, there weren't really any established rules to work from. Names like "Presto", "Concrete", and "Jester" were acceptable for the same reasons "Alakazam", "Electrode", and "Golem" are. They didn't make any assumptions about starters because they only had two real data points to work from, and one of them forced you to get Pikachu as a starter.

This is the fakedex of Pokemon Sage, which was made right here on /vp/. Viipii was made as a kind of mascot, it's supposed to be the Chansey of the region I think.
