How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:
>complete all Trainer Challenges (Cheat Engine's speedhack strongly recommended to speed up AI games)
>play through using Basic decks to unlock them for versus play
>farm Versus Mode theme ladder for Tokens and Tournament Tickets
>Enter Theme format tournaments whenever possible
>enter Standard/Expanded ticket tournaments and accept that you'll lose
>you'll get tradable tournament chests and sometimes tradable packs
>DON'T OPEN THEM
>Instead, trade them for the cards you actually want for a deck you want to build, most cards go for like 1-3 packs each.
>Public trade is like the GTS, if you want proper results, put up your own offers.
>if you don't know what deck you want to build yet, see http://www.pokebeach.com/forums/forum/tcg-competitive-play.156/ or check out tournament results for a list of viable decks http://www.pokemon.com/us/play-pokemon/state-province-championships-2016/decks/week-four/

To see what your PTCGO stuff is worth, look on the PTCGO forums in the trading section. Top Cut & other big trading companies will typically overprice cards, expect to get lower

Are there any differences in mechanics or advantages in Pokemon types like in MTG (White has more lifegain, blue can counter spells, etc)?
>>
>>31093113
not directly, but there are certain cards and archetypes linked to each type. For one there is specific support cards like dive ball for water type, focus sash for fighting etc. There are all the special energy (which might give you an idea of the supposed/alleged strengths of each type), and then there are less stringent advantages - like how anything using Fairy energy can benefit from Fairy Garden and so on.
>>
>>31094262
So basically it's a lot closer to YGO's handling of theme and archetype than MTG's.
>>
>>31094410
You'll be seeing a lot of us, by the way, MTG's current metas are kinda garbage.

>>31094262
gotta ask again. I notice that most decks run only two pokemon types? does running more than two types just doesn't work? Because in MTG, most decks can run up to three or more colors.

I tried OP's suggestion and tried the theme deck on the trainer's challenge and found the theme decks are way underpowered compared to the AI's deck (strong basics against my deck which has basics with lots of drawbacks with their basic attack)
>>
>>31094673
Decks with more than one type of energy are really clunky.
And yeah the theme decks are shit. But when you unlock them for versus, you'll only have to deal with other shit theme decks.

Decks in the PTCG aren't really built around types. Decks tend to built around a central strategy involving a couple of Pokemon, with the rest of the cards used to facilitate consistent execution of this strategy.

Cards such as Shaymin-EX (draw support) go in almost every deck regardless of the types of the main Pokemon, as typing is not massively important for cards not directly part of the main strategy. As >>31094262 said, there are cards which work with specific types. However, these tend to be added in depending on what you are already using (as opposed to picking a type to use and then finding Pokemon to fit).

Most tournament-topping Gardevoir decks just drop M Gardevoir-EX PRC for a more aggressive build based on M Gardevoir-EX STS because Despair Ray is just easier to set up, Brilliant Arrow requires at least two turns of setup with Xerneas to OHKO EXs.

>>31110680
>What packs are best to buy right now?

BREAKpoint, BREAKthrough, Roaring Skies (if you can find 'em), and Ancient Origins are good.

>Should I wait for SM to come out or is the good cards in other packs?

I'd try to pick some up, but a lot of big box stores like Target and Walmart are running thin due to their end-of-the-year sale.

And good cards are always in a mix of the most recently released set and older sets.
>>
>>31110512
No.
>>
>>31111666

So why suggest a different Gardevoir and not Yveltal?
>>
>>31106314
Garbodor.
>>
>>31110512

No, most decks run 3-4. Some can get away with 2, but that's because they have ways of getting those Shaymins back if they have to junk 'em.

>>31111742

Because there are several factors to consider.

>Is the person running a Gardevoir deck because it's their favorite Pokemon?
>Is it because they want to do well in tournaments but not be a complete dickbag and netdeck winning decklists like Yveltal/Garbodor or Greninja BREAK?
>Are they on a budget?

It's also due to them asking for changes, not a complete deck swap.
>>
>>31111852

What you suggested was a complete deck swap to one of the most expensive decks in the format.
>>
>>31111852
Not the anon you're replying to but I don't understand the appeal of trying to mash together both M Gardevoirs and Xerneas BREAK. How is an omni-fairy deck in any way superior to just playing a deck focused on just one of the attackers!

Too lazy to write them out in proper form, but first is standard "look at top 4 cards of your or opponent's dick, then return them in any order", the second is "discard all energy, Pokémon hit with this will be KO'd at the end of opponent's turn".

>>

>>31110512
2 is enough. You can start a shaymin loop with them.

I'm having trouble decide what deck I want to make for standard. Can someone give me the rundown on what the more common decks are in the meta and why they are good?
>>
>>31120600
>>31120655

Checking public offers can be good to get a guideline, but be aware that almost every public offer you'll see is a bad deal. You have to make your own offers to get a reasonable trade.
>>
>>31121544
>Yveltal EX/Garbodor
It's consistent, deals decent damage as most attackers in the meta require 3 energies, there's lots of room for tech choices based on the meta such as disruptive cards like Delinquent and Enhanced Hammer, not very vulnerable to disruption itself and has no autoloss matchups because Electric is basically nonexistent. But requires a lot of skill and practice to get good with, as misplays can brick your board and cost you the game, and there are no autowins as nothing in the meta is weak to Dark.

>Volcanion/Volcanion EX
Also super consistent with its setup, can swing for huge numbers if necessary, non EX attacker only gives one prize. Can struggle to set up under Garbodor, awkward mirror match as it's weak to Water, and players who don't watch their energy count will probably lose.

>M Mewtwo EX/Garbodor
Can hit for high numbers with Psychic Infinty and can abuse Damage Change to stay alive and put huge pressure on opponents. Very vulnerable to disruption, inherent inconsistencies with evolving, weak to Psychic which means the mirror is tough and M Gardevoir EX is an auto loss, resisted by Metal so M Scizor EX is going to be difficult to kill.

>M Gardevoir EX
Fast paced, can 2-shot everything in the meta, 1-shots Shaymin EX, Giratina EX (if negated), Hoopa EX, and Mewtwo in all its forms, somewhat consistent, worries little about vulnerable bench sitters dying to Lysandre, resists Dark. Weak to Metal so M Scizor EX is an autoloss, extremely vulnerable to disruption and Garbodor.

>Darkrai EX/Giratina EX
Consistent and fast, can get great utility out of Giratina EX's attack and ability, can hit for huge numbers quickly. Weak to Fairy and resisted by Fairy makes to M Gardevoir EX an autoloss, Giratina EX is fragile to energy disruption and cards like Ranger, nothing is weak to either Dark or Dragon so no autowins and 1-shotting EX's will be difficult.

There are other decks obviously but these are the ones I would start with.
>>
>>31121962
Yveltal/Garbodor sounds like the best for players who know what they are doing, what is the main reasons why people lose with it? It seems like with other decks you can't win against all decks since they have an auto loss.
>>
>>31122070
Bricking, really. And just misplays when you're under pressure. Especially during the mirror match when your opponent is playing mind games.

Because setting up early is more important since you need more cards to get started than you need to maintain a steady back-and-forth with the opponent. Also, disrupting your opponent late game is crucial, and N does it best.

I've been looking at Greninja Break because it seems very cheap.
>>
>>31124363
It is very cheap and it isn't bad either. You can get easy wins against Volcanion decks and avoid the pain of Evil Ball and Psychic Infinity. Garbodor and Vespiquen are annoying though and Damage Change Mewtwo EX will be impossible to kill.
>>
>>31124539
>Damage Change Mewtwo EX
Wouldn't I use the break ability to hit the bench, or am I misreading/overlooking some cards?
>>
>>31124603
M Mewtwo EX decks play Garbodor so you're stuck with Moonlight Slash and not much else. You'll have to Lysandre it up and try to Slash it twice.

>>
>>31125026
And your answer better not be "all the ones without breaks."
>>
>>31125035
Most of the ones that would want to run Garbodor, but can't due to shutting off their own abilities. And some that already run Garb.

It would be more ridiculous as an Ex.
>>
>>31124897
But it needs a tool, is there anything which breaks tools?
>>
>>31125026
>>31125035
Well really just Volcanion because it didn't already run Garbodor and it has a pretty bad Greninja matchup anyway. They'll still have to deal with taking 160 damage from Moonlight Slash but now they'll at least survive without being Shuriken'd.

In Expanded this will be a staple in just about every deck just to keep Trevenant players from evolving.

>>
>>31125143
that other guy is dumb, misleading, or just fixated on easier times, ignore him.

There are a few things but no, there is no longer the splashable Megaphone or Xerosic like you can use in Expanded. Instead you have to tech specifically for expected Garb match-ups. Rattata, Minccino, & Beedrill-EX are the obvious options.
>>
>>31125832
>>31125832
Ratatta is useless after the fact and Beedrill EX is risky because it's easy to kill and the opponent can just hang onto their extra copies of Float Stone or whatever until Beedrill is killed.
>>
>>31125832

>Rattata, Minccino, & Beedrill-EX

Do people actually play these? Surely dragging out Trubbish/Garbodor with Lysandre and knocking it out is the better way to go?

I play Volcanion and this is how I deal with Garb.
>>
>>31127602
No one plays these.
>>
>>31127602
I think rattata could be usable in Despair Ray M-Gardevoir but putting something with low HP like the other two in the active slot and wasting energy on it to get rid of a tool they can reattach next turn seems like a stupid risk. Rattata is only useful in despair ray because you can remove it from the bench, otherwise it's too much of a liability.

In threads pre-Sun/Moon hype, people mostly followed the etiquette of opening and posting pulls. Hopefully as these threads re-establish, things will get back to normal.

>>
Hey, I haven't played in a year or so, are any of the theme decks (Burning Spark and newer) worth getting, either for cards or Theme VS? (Dark Hammer still seems to be working for me though)
OP doesn't seem to have recommendations anymore.
>>
>>31138163

Doing trainer challenges will give you a lot of boosters, which should give you a decent starting collection.

You can also enter theme deck tournaments when it switches to tickets rather than tokens. The chest/packs you'll win can be traded for staple cards. Pretty much everything barring VS Seeker is really cheap.
>>
I'm literally just starting. Got 50 some codes from my friend who don't play online.

I threw them in and got a shitton of cards now. What can I make? Doesn't have to be tier one, just a simple little cheap deck.

There's nothing to make out of these cards. But Shaymin EX goes in every deck so that's a good pull.
>>
>>31139920
So can I pawn them off on the market?

What should I look for?
>>
>>31139860

Shaymin-EX is really useful and is very expensive. Every player has to get them at some point, so you've saved yourself quite a lot of packs down the line.

M Ray-EX, Dragonite-EX and Mew-EX are pretty good cards and can be sold for a bit if you don't want to use them. Zoroark is useful, but not massively valuable. The rest of the cards will probably only go for 1-2 packs each at most.
>>
>>31140057
>>31139973

Firstly, you should look to get hold of the staple Trainer cards, such as:

4 Professor Sycamore
2-3 N
2 Lysandre
4 VS Seeker
3-4 Trainers' Mail
4 Ultra Ball
2-3 Float Stones

Maybe also a Hex Maniac and Pokemon Ranger.

These cards will be the backbone of most decks and are fairly cheap in the main. The other cards you add will depend on what deck you want to play.

Greninja is pretty affordable, but Garbodor is very common in Standard and basically hard counters Greninja.

There are other decks with cheap components, but pretty much every other deck needs Shaymins to work and they are expensive. You can try using Octillery as a budget substitute however.

Sorry I can't help you in that case m8. I only play online so I don't really know the irl market.

Thinking simplistically, I'd suggest that once Generations' cards rotate out of Standard the packs will drop in value. However, Generations doesn't have too many commonly used cards in it and so this might be outweighed by the scarcity of the packs in future.

Also, Generations is supposed to have pretty good pull rates, so they could be fun to open.

>a card which reaches most of its value from the opponent overextending usually isn't a good card.

Yeah, this is fairly accurate. Good players tend not to use cards unnecessarily and are likely to adjust their play to hinder their opponent if they can. That said though, Yveltal/Garbodor players often load up their Yveltal-EXs with energy as this actually powers up Yveltal-EX's attack.

As >>31148045 pointed out though, this is somewhat irrelevant as that Dedenne is only legal in Expanded. In Standard, Zebstrika is the way to go.
>>
>>31148354
Going by the whole "most things need three energies" comment somewhere above, Yveltal EX seems to do 120 damage minimum. This isn't enough? Also, with the two energies, Dedenne only does 80 damage, and would need three attacks to kill Yveltal, and Yveltal one-shots it.
>>
>>31148424
>and Yveltal one-shots it.
Assuming the Dedenne has an energy attachd, I mean.
>>
>>31145599

Gardevoir has a decent matchup against Yveltal. As long as you don't get off to a slow start against a Fright Night Yveltal, you usually do well.

It can be, but against many decks this will leave you only taking 2HKOs and lots of the top decks atm can OHKO Yveltal. As such, Yveltal may well need more energy attachments.

>Also, with the two energies, Dedenne only does 80 damage, and would need three attacks to kill Yveltal, and Yveltal one-shots it.

Well Dedenne hits Yveltal-EX for weakness (x2) which has to be taken into account. That said, Dedenne really wouldn't be the best way to handle Yveltal-EX. Zebstrika (pic related) OHKOs even if Yveltal-EX has a Fighting Fury Belt attached.

I'd like to buy a complete set of XY Evolutions, just for nostalgia's sake. What's the most efficient way of filling it out, buying cards individually, buying boxes, or buying a box and buying whatever cards I don't pick?
>>
>>31154990
I ended up buying 2 xy trainer boxes and 10 of those 3 pack bundles from that 30% off pre black friday from Target. Came out to be like $3 a pack.

I have a shit load of duplicates of shitty rares and common cards but missing a bunch, mainly a few full arts and some ex's.

I think it's better to just buy one booster box and then buy the singles.

After all the pack openings, buying the singles to finish will cost me $80.

I already have the m. charizard ex full art so the rest is mainly the cheaper full arts.

Ebay had a $15 off $75 yesterday. A booster box was $90, with the coupon $75.

About $2 a pack.

Definitely better to open up a box and then fill the rest with singles.
>>
>>31155050
Cheers mate, probably saved me a lot of trouble, and money
>>
Regarding Trainer Challanges: Do you have to beat them with a different deck to get the next star?

I've beaten a few and not received stars and a common factor seems to be I'd used the deck before. Seems a bit shit if it is true as they only give you the 3 to start with and you'd have to buy at least another theme deck and play at a disadvantage for some to get the boosters. Probably fair with the number of boosters on offer.

Vikavolt-GX – Lightning – HP240
Stage 2 – Evolves from Charjabug
[L] Charge Beam: 50 damage. Attach 1 Energy card from your discard pile to this Pokemon.
[L][C][C][C] Super Zap Cannon: 180 damage. Discard 2 Energy attached to this Pokemon.
[L][C][C][C] Gigatron GX: Does 60 damage to each of your opponent’s Benched Pokemon. (Don’t apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokemon.) (You can’t use more than 1 GX attack in a game.)
When your Pokemon-GX is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.
Weakness: Fighting (x2)
Resistance: Metal (-20)
Retreat: 1

Seems alright, just lacking a bit of damage to reach the 250 hp knockouts.
>>
>>31156683
>recycles itself while doing amazing damage

>250 hp knockouts
That's going to only be a few other GXs, and depending on the situation you might just snipe a few cards.

Fomantis, Eevee, and Cosmog only pack 60 HP (just looking at S/M basics that might see use). If your opponent is careless with their bench then you get some free picks.

That card looks decent, but I think the regular Vikavolt card seems like it is probably better though.

Here's the Pokebeach translation:

Vikavolt – Lightning – HP150
Stage 2 – Evolves from Charjabug
Ability: Strong Charge
Once during your turn (before your attack), you may search your deck for a [G] Energy and a [L] Energy and attach them to your Pokemon in any way you like. Shuffle your deck afterwards,
[L][C][C][C] Electrocannon: 150 damage. Discard 3 Energy attached to this Pokemon.
Weakness: Fighting (x2)
Resistance: Metal (-20)
Retreat: 3
>>
>>31156880

Also, anyone else really loving the look of Lightning Pokemon with the redesign?

Yellow is my favourite colour anyway, but that silver border really makes the cards look amazing.
>>
>>31156880
Well with Grubbin being Grass you could get either out a little easier with FoGP. One day we might get a Grass Charjabug though
>>
>>31156880
>[G] Energy and a [L] Energy
Sounds amazing on paper, but what deck could you really combo this with?
>>
>>31156880
You can easily play both and they actually combo pretty nicely too. Super Zap Cannon every turn.
>>
>>31156683
>>31156880

pretty much. It's been dominant for a month or two now because of that, but now since that fact is a known quantity, people are teching quite specifically against it, which means it's fading away again. Top 8 at Dallas this weekend included no Yveltal at all.

1st-4th MGard, MMew, MGard, MGard
MGard, Darktina, Greninja, Greninja

Scizor is an autoloss for MGard but no-one is playing Scizor right now because of Volcanion. And MGard can be tweaked to handle the Garb part of Yveltal/Garb easily enough. The whole standard Meta is very rock-paper-scissors right now and will continue to be until SM lands. Yveltal included, just cos there's now big lightning decks doesn't mean it can't be beat.

Stopped playing for a while, just decided to start it back up today. Sitting on 125 packs of Steam Siege, 12 packs of RS, 22 packs of Generations and a handful of other varied packs. What are some fun decks to invest in, or should I wait for SM to drop? I already have 3 Shaymin EX, was running M Gard for a long time and I hear it's very popular now.
>>
>>31170188
look at the tott, most people will only use it for trading basically. It's not too good
>>
>>31170313
SM is going to bring tons of fun new cards, decks & archetypes. There are a handful of standout meta-impacting cards - more than any set has had since PF imo, plus plenty of interesting little niche cards to explore.

If you're impatient, do you want "fun" but still tournament friendly, or just fun. If it's more Meta, then >>31121962 is a good round-up of what's topping these days.
>>
>>31170686
>There are a handful of standout meta-impacting cards
Care to mention them? Because honestly I've been looking over the set list and I don't see any cards at all that will see immediate use.
>>
>>31166770
The fact that decks have to all specifically tech against a single archetype is a failure of game design imo.

>>

Weakness being x2 damage instead of something modest like +20 damage is the game design failure.

>>31170953
Vileplume Toolbox. A Toolbox deck uses Rainbow Energy and a bunch of different typed Pokemon. You'll find lists for it on Pokemon's official results page for different regionals. I don't remember which regionals exactly had Plumebox top.
>>
>>31171065
>Weakness being x2 damage instead of something modest like +20 damage is the game design failure.
That can very easily be fixed by using "[X] +20" instead of "[X] x2" and not giving a fuck that the transition period will be painful.

Pokebeach is fucking garbage, I had to Google "pokebeach 'from SM1+'" just to get a list of spoilers.
>>
>>31170751
Let me skim here; Alolan Muk is a silent lab that allows you to play a different stadium to silent lab, opens tons of strategies.

Vikavolt gives [L] a much needed way to charge up those costly attacks minus the downside of Voltorb. I don't think we'll really see it make an impact until Vikavolt-GX comes along in SM+1 for split-evo decks. If lightning gets good, Yveltal will fade for a while again. Any boosts to lightning is good right now to level the field some.

The Dragonair line (and some legitimately useful lower evolution cards is further evidenced we're being pushed away from big basics to a slower big evos game. See Frogadier, Serpine etc. And the 240HP+ on some of these stage 2s. Nest Ball is small but important to evolution decks that often don't want to discard. Or even just as a fifth/sixth Ultra Ball.

Toxapex & Posion Barb (along with the return of Burn) signal a push by devs of status effects, which ought to slowly move us towards a more evolution-based metagame over big basics since it's the easiest way to shed status. Barb & Raticate Break along with Evos Raticate maybe?

Alolan Raticate is interesting but prone to Ns. Still, it could potentially be impactful enough that people start reversing their Sycamore/N counts because having that disruption to hand will become so important. With more Ns around, that Oranguru ability is a lot more useful than it looks. Non-Shaymin, non-evo, non-supporter draw.

Shinotic alone can bring back a surge in Vileplume decks - a non-item based way to set up more item lock under your own lock..

Decidueye is getting hyped. I don't know about that, but a 240HP that snipes for no cost except getting it evolved could be a big deal.

Primarina's GX-attack alone (heal everything for a DCE) - think of all those decks that couldn't work out because of Max Potion need to discard energy. That could be broken as fuck in the right build. It can be Archied too.
>>
>>31171585
>Character limit
Eevee has been gifted a whole toolbox of tactics it can pull out on turn one. Maybe not entirely it's own deck, but it'll be something.

I don't even know where to start with the box legends, especially combined with the promo Lunaala. Stoppable, but if you dead draw while they get started right..

I'm not saying these will all be meta decks and cards or the meta will drastically shift, but each of these has the potential to start a little ripple effect. Lightning could see a re~surge not seen since Manectric. Grass can come out swinging turn one more than ever.

I'm sure some anon will come in and write off all these cards as trash garbage but that meme happens every set. It's miles better than Evos. And each of the Break expansions had a few useful cards but not many. This set seems to have tons. They are laying out the groundwork here for some future rotation in a few years when it will be SM-on, and here is where those strategies each begin.

For more niche fun stuff, Araquanid can stop Volcanion builds dead and they will have to change their sets if it became anyway viable (it won't though). Passimian can be hitting for silly numbers turn one, and in expanded with fighting support could be unstoppable by turn 2. I've got some ideas for how to use that little Wishiwashi to bring back consistency to Archie builds in standard. Pinsir Giant Fan shenanigans, and plenty more memetastics decks could be made.

Rotations are done every August and only affect the Standard format, with 3-4 of the oldest sets and a block consisting of 30-0 Black Star Promos are rotated out of it.
