Better question is why they made all three of them so worthless in battle this gen. Usually you get at least one standout.

When pokemon first began they couldnt just throw anything together and expect it to sell. Its not like today when everyone goes insane when a new game is announced.

So in order to get a beginning appeal the designs had to be a touch more simplistic, right down to the point and iconic.

Say what you want about their designs, but Charizard, Blastoies and Venasaur are very iconic deigns when you think of the original water fire grass trio.

2nd gen was the next set of games and would follow a similar idea (though probably not doing quite as well due to Meganium looking very happy and Typhlosion not having that larger monstrous look to him like the orginal three reptiles did.) Still by this point they were starting to get more confident.

By the time 3rd gen hit, Gamefreak felt much more free to play around with the designs of pokemon, and you can see the changes in Blaziken, Swampert and Sceptile. Fur and feathers look less wild and instead opt for a much more symmetrical look and designs as a whole show a bit more thought towards the creatures looking a little more like a cartoon rather then anime wild animals (not saying either is better then the other.)

Now a days, gamefreak has much more freedom. They can put more lore or theme the starters a lot more because unlike the original three who had to try and appeal to everyone, newer starters can aim at more niche groups of their fan base.

Kanto's mons are much more basic but give people much more of what they want in battle monsters, while newer gens try to be a touch more creative with lore so you actually need to read up on them. And really I think both are good, letting multiple kinds of people enjoy the game and its creatures.

Put it this way, I nuzlocked Sun and I sacrificed my Decidueye for my Misdreavus (he had Eviolite, thankfully) during the Mimikyu totem fight. I felt a stronger bond with him than my own starter, which was a first.

This picture is exaggerated but I agree. With gen 5 the starters' quality decreased a lot. Gen 5 starters aren't bad but aren't good either. Gen 6 starters are just ok, Chesnaught has weird proportions, Delphox is disappointing and Greninja is good but clearly designed to be forced by GF. Gen 7 is the worst overall: Incineroar is cartoony, Primarina is a tranny. Decidueye is pretty good though.

How exactly is meganium femenine? Because of the flower? That's fucking stupid, neither flowers nor sauropods are inherently femenine. Both exist in male form in the real world, and meganium works as both genders as much as any other regular animal pokemon. It's nothing like the trannyseal which is based on a female creature, and is wearing female clothing and accesories, with femenine mannerism on top of it.

Nothing about Delphox's design conveys any tsundere traits, and both wizards and witches are known to wear long robes that go down to the floor. Braixen is feminine, but I will never understand people who say Delphox is. Primarina is feminine, yes. I would argue that Infernape is a pretty masculine design though, too. And assuming you aren't operating on some double-standard here when you list the starters as not being obviously one particular gender as a positive to the first four generations, then that's no different.

Won't argue that starters have become more humanoid over time, though I don't have an issue with that. How many are reptiles doesn't really matter at all. Across 12 starters in the first 4 generations, 6 are reptilian, 2 are mammalian, 2 are avian, and 1 is amphibious. Pretty lopsided. Though, in the last 9, 6 are mammals, with 1 reptile, 1 bird, and 1 amphibian.

Compare each stage of Chikorita to each stage of the rest of the first two starter gens. It is by far the most cutesy at every stage, and the gap between it and the rest widens as it goes up in forms. Chikorita literally has a leaf ponytail.
Mechanically, Meganium is the least offensive starter of the first six.

This was the fucking turn of the millennium. Look at every other example of division between "Male" and "Female" Pokemon. Nidoking has higher attack stats than Nidoqueen, Tauros has higher attack stats than Miltank. The precedent is there.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon has Chikorita as a female exclusive starter. In the anime, not only was Ash's Chikorita female, but it was stereotypically girly as well.

Pokemon tried it's absolute damndest to make sure you, the player, understood that Chikorita was feminine. Maybe it was to attract female players, maybe it was to establish that not all your fightan monsters needed to be big uggos, I dunno the reason. But the fact is that they did put in that effort.

Incineroar will be used a lot in VGC after it gets Intimidate. It will pretty much take Arcanine's role. STAB Snarl may not seem like much, but it can help a lot in fighting A-Marowak. And Intimidate is just really good in doubles regardless.
