Youtube's algorithm determines popularity by region, so people in countries with less competition tend to get pushed more. That's why you see so many brits on your Youtube recommendations.

That's also how PewDiePie got so popular, due to an oversight in the algorithm where he got pushed twice as hard because he moved from one smaller country to another.
