You always know he's ultimately going to lose at the end of the season, then give his Pokemon to Oak and start over in another region. That's just how the show works. You either watch it for the character interaction or to see how subplots progress.

The ironic thing is Serena's showcases are the closest thing to the game Contests in the anime. They're very similar to the game versions, whereas the anime Contests in Hoenn and Sinnoh are so different than the games.

Imagine if when AG started May's Contests were just appeals and no battling? Combine that with the animation at the time not being as impressive as DP/XY....the Contests probably would have bombed in the anime. Battles literally saved the whole concept in the show.

The problem with that is that almost every episode of DP, outside of that stretch of filler that's already subbed, had a least a small bit of plot progression. DP liked to do this thing where Ash and Dawn would have to sit down with each of their Pokemon and work with them to learn anything, so every contest and gym battle is the culmination of 5-ish episodes of training. You lose out on the cohesion that made DP good if you just fast forward to the highlights.

I'm not sure if Serena will get a special because the art style changed. The Cilan and legendary special were obviously made directly after XY ended before they switched to Toon Boom to animation SM. They probably don't have the old animation studio to make a Serena special in XY style.

4Kids losing the license has ended up hurting the Pokemon dub in terms of quality, though, they had the better voice cast, intros, script writers & they kept more of the OST than TPCi has as a whole (though the jury's out on how they'll handle SM's dub in its proper run, but I'm not getting my hopes up and am expecting the OST to be replaced).
