The fact the TPCi has always been schizophrenic about who is the intended demographic for Pokemon.
You balance the fact that the branding and characterization has to be child friendly, with the fact that the games have to maintain a competetive scene that only older players will ever truly interact with.

That mixture can foster arrested development in the long-term player base. Only half of the franchise acknowledges any growth in the player, and the other half has to stay the exact same across decades so it doesn't alienate the new generations.
