Hambeast girl here, used to dislike it at first, but then I tried to give it a chance by training one

Went straight to PC afterwards, not that interested in the typing at all and if I were, I'd just rather Azumarill honestly. As a female starter, it's great, as a male, it's a bloody mess of a concept to even consider it as such thanks to its mannerisms in Amie. It's a fairy, to be blunt.

One thing I didn't like about this set of starters was that they gave a lot of personality to the first forms this time, but for some reason just threw those ideas out after they evolve. It's especially jarring for Popplio since it seems like it's the wacky one of the starters and it jumps straight to being a cutemon in its second form.

All the starters change as they evolve of course, but compare that to say, Serperior, which retains the "arrogance" Snivy has.

I can see the unifying theme, but you're talking about the surface design aspects whereas I was referring more to how its animated. I think they could've still had the sense of humor that Popplio gave off. Like I think they could've give Brionne a "stick its tongue out" idle animation and give Primarina a winking idle animation to still give it that air of playfulness.

I think Incineroar did somewhat a better job of this. Litten appears uncaring whereas Incineroar appears hostile, but for both it's just a front and its friendliness shows through when you pet it in Refresh and such.
