Some of the voice direction is a little odd, kind of cheesy, but I kind of liked it
The length, but that's fine, they're only meant to capture moments of the series, though there are lots to capture
Leaf and Hilda are chucked to the void, at least Lucas showed up in the movies as a cameo, while Hilbert finally got to be animated, and Nate and Rosa had the B2W2 trailer. We could've seen Hilda's glorious butt animated

Pretty much everything else.

I'd love to see more of this honestly. There's so many more moments, even simple moments that they could've gotten in an episode. Perhaps a follow up series that follows the female protagonists. I think their line of reasoning was that the female protagonists usually show up in the main anime anyway, but still. Maybe some episodes about the events in Alola would be cool (there's a lot they could work with, pretty much everything about the UBs, Gladion and Type: Null, and so on).

Ideally we would have seen things like the culture that built the regi trio, the relic castle grounds when they were still busting with ancient people, new mauville's collapse, cheren becoming a gym leader and iris becoming the champion, n's upbringing or lack thereof, the weird team rocket guy moving to Unova and raising a family, etc. we got s few good moments like seeing Lysandre pre-hopelessness and looker interacting with silver, but overall generations didn't deliver at all.

I feel it was a huge missed opportunity.
They made several poor choices in what to make an episode on, most episodes omitted actual Pokemon battles - skipping them over or ending the episode on a cliffhanger.

In many cases you had to have played the games to understand much of the context occurring for an episode - which means you aren't learning anything new.

Not my problem that it has more stories to tell than Kanto, but speaking of which we could have gotten something like a story of the underground pass and the people who hung out there, or people trying to prove mew exists because it's a cryptid or whatever. I'm just naming ideas. Anything off the beaten path would have been better than shitty sparknotes versions of ingame events we all played through. I thought the point of generations was to explore the lore of the games, not tell the same story we already know.

No Sun/Moon episodes. I don't understand why not. It literally exists to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the games.

It's pretty clear that the MC of the games are nothing but a means for the player to experience a story, just like most silent protagonists.
But in this show, the only appearances they make at all, are when Red faces Blue, when Brendan fights Deoxys and when Hilbert comes to help N
Most of the episodes are even about in-game events, just without the MC at all

Would it be too much to assume that in most cases, for all intents and purposes, the MC does not canonically exist?

Most of stories "never before seen" or whatever were boring. That being said Hoenn had the better shorts.

The whole thing was 50/50 when it came to what it wanted to tell.

Lysandre episode was at least mildly interesting where as AZ episode was pointless. Needed more actual original stories or better perspective shifts.

This is sort of "damned if you do, damned if you don't." Any real personality is going rub the self insert autists the wrong way. Look at the shitposting just because they were all guys.

Their best bet would've simply been to avoid the events where a PC was required, which fits into a lot of other critiques anyway.

It leaves no impact. Only vaguely interesting episode was the Old Chateau episode, and that was purely from an animation standpoint.
Everything was dull reinterpretations of things we already saw in the game, or things we could have easily inferred. Some of them weren't even that well animated.
