the problem was most of the replacements were EXACTLY the same. like Woobat was still an irritating bat that was fast, oddly bulky, and did most of its damage through confusion and attraction

Basically, Unova did for its entire dex what most gens do just for its route 1. Which is odd because Unova's early route mons were mostly really good. Patrat and Lillipup are good Rattata equivalents, Pidove isn't particularly special but I actually like the design. And Venipede and Sewaddle are fucking awesome first-bug lines. The problem is when you go beyond there.

The idea of "no previous gen pokemon" is great but when a lot of pokemon seem like the same thing but different (Munna and Drowzee, Woobat and Zubat, Drilbur and Sandshrew, etc.) it was kind of weird. That said, there were also a lot of fucking awesome designs in Gen 5 that completely redeem it from the rehashmons. Sure we have Throh and Sawk or the Timbur line, but we also got awesome lines like Darumaka, Pawniard, Golett, Sandile, Litwick, and Scraggy.

Almost all Gen IV pokemon. I've been playing since RBY and Gen IV is the only gen where the pokemon I found hideous initially never grew on me in the slightest. If I were to pick out the worst offenders it'd probably be most of the new evolutions for old pokemon like Rhyperior and Magmortar.

Here's their source then.

Every generation has Stinker designs that just don't work; what's really important is the ones that shine as really good. The problem with 5th Gen is that it had too many Stinkers that were just very unattractive clones of existing Pokemon with less interesting visual character and too few shiners. Ironically, most of Unova's good designs were the ones that weren't ugly reproductions of Gen 1 designs.

There are a few more. The fact of the matter is that the duplicates were just flat out nowhere near as inspired as the original designs and have too much of the "modern aesthetics" syndrome where they fill in an outline with brightly colored shapes instead of thematically appropriate designs.

I don't say B/W was bad, but it's probably the lowest point of the series - which is okay, because it marked the start of the modern pokemon generations (Post-4th Gen) which led to two pretty great generations in its wake. It was heavily flawed just like First Gen, but that has paved the way for new innovations, quality of life upgrades, refinement of old formulas, and a new generation of players who love Pokemon. Would I ever play it again? Very unlikely unless I wanted eye strain and to be bored. Are most of its Pokes forgettable? Absolutely. Will I ever neglect how much it's shaped much better games? Absolutely not.

Pyukumuku too - its movepool has no purpose except to ineffectively stall and counter physical attackers. One Wobbuffet was okay as a gimmick but no more please.

Sun and Moon in general had one of the weakest crops of new Pokemon, but I don't want to take out any more because it'll leave SM pretty barren.

Other than that, I guess Remove Genies. I'd complain about Primals but the real complaint isn't that they exist (because they were pretty cool in story) but that there was a format where they were VGC legal - which sounded like a cool idea until we got into it for a year.

I'm going to use this opportunity to sit out my grievances with the gen 5 merch. The actual products where fine- some were lovely, even. It's the packaging.

Something about that black and white checkerboard shit just made it feel so sterile, cold, and lifeless, and not like Pokémon. Am I the only one who felt that way? The XY packaging was much more inviting and colorful, and it felt like actual Pokémon products.
