Also, there can be different universes (aka different game versions) with different protagonists. Maybe Brendan is the protagonist and May is the rival in the Omega Ruby universe and the reverse is true in the Alpha Sapphire universe. Generations showed that Hilbert was the protagonist of the White/White 2 universe, so maybe Hilda is the protagonist of the Black/Black 2 universe. Calem is the protagonist of the Y universe, so maybe Serena is the protagonist of the X universe. Platinum was what was shown in Generations, so they avoided showing a protagonist in fear of it being the "definitive" protagonist of that Generation. All the other episodes could be paired games.
