nope, I just had shitty luck for a long time, I'm at least glad it was before gen 6 when shiny encounter rate skyrocketed.

My first ever shiny was a yellow caterpie in sun. I've played all the games since ruby, and in all those years I've never seen one until release date for sun and moon.

Shiny Skrelp from an afternoon of chain fishing in Y. Felt hollow, immediately pawned it off on GTS for a Xerneas because the games were still fresh.

Then a Shiny Gastly while breeding. Wasn't even Masuda, just trying to get my pentaperfect Gengar, and the first pentaperfect egg was a shiny. Of course this was right on the cusp of Sun and Moon coming out, pentagon pokemon becoming worthless, and Gengar getting knocked down a few pegs.

Then a Shiny Snorunt while masuda breeding. But I was breeding it specifically to trade for something else. I was trying to get a female and got a male, so this is just sitting in my box as a failure.

Then a Shiny Snorunt that was female which I traded for a Diancie.

...Then a Shiny Snorunt in the wild during my first Moon playthrough, female, and timid. Wasn't even SOS chaining.

I've been playing since Blue and breeding since SS and I didn't even see a wild shiny until I chain fished one up in X. I caught shiny luvdisc on the 12th cast of one chain and then a shiny Clauncher on the 12th cast of another chain and then I didn't see another wild shiny until earlier this year. Ironically the first shiny I ever hatched happened right before I got the shiny charm in X.

I have gotten quite a few over the years Gyarados excluded my first was Abra in silver I didn't even know shinies were a thing when this happened and I panicked that it was mega fucking rare and threw my masterball at it incase it teleported, I also got a shiny Goldeen in silver. My next few were Shinx in platinum and both Audino and Lillipup in B/W.

Pretty lucky considering all were wild encounters and I have never used the methods that give you higher chance of shinies im yet to encounter one in Moon though

Anyone ever tried duplicating pokemon in Crystal version? There was that exploit where you switched them around in the boxes or something and turned the game off in the middle of it saving.

The first Shiny I ever saw was on my dad's run through Gold's Victory Road, it was a golden Graveler that self destructed. My dad tried soft resetting for it but of course it didn't respawn.
Mine was pic related, I caught in the Sapphire post game and evolved it but then forgot about it and accidentally deleted it when I restarted the game.

This seems like a relevant thread to ask:

Does anyone know if the shininess of an egg is determined at the egg's creation or at the time that the pokemon hatches? I'm considering filling up Isle Avue with eggs and soft resetting for shinies but I feel like I might just be wasting time.

I guess I could do a trial run and see if the natures and stats are different after an SR, I suppose that'd be a good indication that the pokemon's attributes aren't determined until it hatches.

I had just gotten the Old Rod and I was fishing up a storm in Violet City trying to level something up. I had already caught a normal Poliwag, and the shiny isn't drastically different from the regular one, but I saw those sparkles and had a gut feeling that it was really important. I caught it and used that bro all through the game. Never evolved him past Poliwhirl because I couldn't decide between Poliwrath and Politoed, so he stayed as a gorgeous bright blue tadpole until the battery gave out.

I miss my first shiny.

fastest way is to make a ditto with destiny knot fuck a magikarp. Save before you deposit.
make 30 eggs and retrieve parents. Then hatch the eggs. If no shiny just save and do itall over again

if you find a shiny you can reset the game and switch parents. The same egg will have a shiny.

Technically true but also kind of wrong. Since the Pokemon still doesn't have an OT/ID because that only gets applied after hatching, the Pokemon isn't designate as shiny until AFTER hatching.

This also means that if you have an egg that will hatch into a shiny and you trade it to someone else, it won't hatch as a shiny, and you can get traded an egg that wasn't shiny only to have it hatch into a shiny.

An egg has an OT/ID to show where it was generated and who by, but an egg is just an egg and cannot be shiny. Only a pokemon can be shiny, which is determined by the hatched OT/ID and not the previous egg OT/ID regardless of it being in the same game or not.

So technically, you are wrong by saying an egg is shiny as it's an indicator of things to come. But you are right in the fact that an egg has an OT/ID.

I played around with the shiny minigame grass shake thing in Platinum, but I never understood that you needed to use repels and didn't care enough to keep trying after a while.

my first ever shiny was a shiny shuppet in sapphire when I was like 10 (it was the first game I ever bought). it was the first shuppet I had ever seen and I didn't know what a shiny was but I wanted it for my pokedex so I caught it and named it Serina. I still have it :) it's evolved into a banette now and lv 100. Aside from this I have like 60 legit wild caught shinies which has pissed my brother off to no end (spanning all gens since GSC) I don't hunt or search for them though I just randomly find them while screwing around in the grass with my itemfinder. I do have a funny story about my second shiny which was a golbat I named Jacki (same save file in sapphire as my shuppet, I was weirdly attached to Hex girl jacki idk why). anyways my bro comes into my room and is screaming about go to the shoal cave because he caught a shiny golbat and that if I hurry up and go search there I might find one. I was really skeptical because I didn't think it would work and as I'm older I knew there had to be some math involved in finding shinies. He keeps yelling so I give in and go search the shoal cave in the ice part like he said and 10 mins in bam shiny goldbat. He was equal parts smug and pissed because it worked but now he only had 1 shiny and I had 2 lol
