English names are worthless for determining what a Pokemon is based on, especially in Gen 1 & 2.
They're monsters with mostly amphibious traits. There aren't really any dinosaurs that they resemble more than they resemble toads.

Venusaur line always reminded me of Dycinodonts, with Venusaur being a Kannemeyeriidae, which were sinapsyds (ancestors of mammals pretty much).
