Why is the ice rock always so late game?

except if they were going to redistribute types any way, there is no reason they couldn't include more fire, water, steel, rock, and fighting-types in early/mid game to keep the player's ice-types in check

ice beam and blizzard can still be late/postgame, and the player could rely on level up movesand weaker ice attacks like aurora beam and ice fang, like the player has to do for literally every other type

Starmie was actually one of these for the longest time until I did a White 2 Nuzlocke and it became my MVP.

For me, it's most of the new Pokemon, I did a Nuzlocke for my first run of Sun and barely got to use any of them. Only Incineroar and Toucannon were new on my team, though I used Bruxish for an extremely short time (literally died in it's first post-grinding battle), Wishiwashi for a bit, and Silvally in the postgame, but that's it.

For long time, it's Drapion. Never got round to it.

I used Starmie a lot with minimize+recover in BW

Similarly, Muk became a minor MVP on my team just due to minimize. I never thought I'd ever use a Muk and there it is on my team now.

I've always wanted to have Relicanth or Omastar on my team, but it's never happened.

I really believe if trade evolutions were never a thing, that Golem would have been my favourite pokemon. The first episode I saw of the anime was the one where Team Rocket fights a biker gang on a bridge who have a Golem and I though it was just the coolest thing, especially when I saw that Geodude (who I also like) was its first form. It would have been one of the first team members and it would have been pretty solid playing through Red aside from the obvious grass/water weakness, as it'd tank all the normal attacks that get spammed and ground and fighting weren't all that common attackwise back then. It could have been my ace, and that first, definitive playthrough could have really cemented its place in my heart. Especially as it shows up in so many other games, so that I could use my bro over and over as the backbone of my teams.

But I hated the idea of being stuck with a second stage for the rest of the game and instead Golem is just a pokemon I sometimes use in lower tier Showdown matches. What could have been.

It would be cool if they added a sort of "trade stone" you could get somewhere in the game to evolve pokemon that normally need to be traded. I think there's a romhack with something like that.

why they gotta evolve so fucking late, especially when most of them just end up being incredibly mediocre

hilariously one of the mons that evolves earlier than most in the gen, drilbur, is a fucking beast and one of the best offensive pokemon you could ask for

Scizor. It's my favorite Pokemon, but Scyther are often a pain to get, and so are metal claws. Also, trade evolution is a pain in general. I don't have a second 3DS, and I can't trade evolve over Pokemon Bank, so I have to use the GTS with a throwaway Pokemon to evolve it. By the time I can bother to get around with this, I've generally beaten the entire game.

If you have a second game, but one console:

1. In your game without your Graveler, put up a Rattata or something dumb on the GTS, ask for a Graveler. Worst case scenario, someone gives you their Graveler.
2. In game with Graveler, open up GTS, look for your own trade, and send.
3. Go to other game, receive Golem.
4. If you have Pokemon Bank, just send it over. If you don't, repeat the above exchange with the roles reversed, so Golem gets sent back to its original game.

A pain in the ass, but do-able.
