SM feels shitty to some people because of the opposite reason of XY: XY anime is regarded as pretty good and the 7th gen games are becoming quick favourites for many from what I've seen . Serena wasn't one-dimensional early on, though. She didn't do much Pokemon battling early on, and the explanation of how the things she was trying out would fit into her future was poorly explained. But for example the first thing we learn about her in the show has nothing to do with her crush. It has to do with her relationship with her mother.

What we need is more of a concrete sense of direction, and the characters being more relevant to where we're headed. Right now, it doesn't seem like what Sophocles, Mallow and Lana are doing is of much relevance.

Come on now, Serena had some real emotional depth and a well-defined backstory. Post-AG Brock was a borderline-rape-y running-gag machine, and Cilan was an eccentric Pokemon sommelier. Because we still haven't gotten much of a real look into Lillie's soul. We get a brief explanation of how she can't remember where her fear of Pokemon comes from, but otherwise its role in the show has been reduced to a running gag so far. Serena's "character features" (her crush, her tension with her mother) were central motivators and drivers of her character and major contributors to the show's story from the very first episode. With Lillie, that simply doesn't hold true, even with today's episode finally giving us a little bit of SOMETHING.

We'll never have girls that battle regularly ever again. When it started with May and continued with Dawn, I thought it was going to be the standard for all girls going forward.

Then Iris came and her battles were in the Don battle tournaments but she had no real ongoing goal, Serena's goal had no battling, and now it seems the SM girls won't do much battling either.

I absolutely am making the case that Serena wasn't one-dimensional. Brock after AG definitely was one- or two-dimensional. Cilan was better but still wasn't THAT multi-dimensional. Serena's lack of concrete goal at the early part of the series kind of sucked, but at least she had a backstory, she had lots of introspective moments that gave us a sense of where she'd be likely headed, and her future role/purpose in the show was well-defined early on.
