Not sure if they were, but these past years/generations have changed a lot regarding counterparts and their connections etc.

Mantine and Skarmory for instance, are both counterparts, they both had the same amount of BST with 465, though Mantine got a slight boost in Gen 7 from 465 to 485 BST and also a pre evo from Gen 4. Skarmory got no boost in Gen 7 or pre evo at all unlike Mantine, both of them where version exclusives Mantine in Gold and Skarmory in Silver.

yes. on top of the elemental punches that was mentioned, all three could learn Psychic, which was pretty unusual in the case of electabuzz/magmar since it wasn't nearly that broad of a coverage move back then and it was pretty rare for non-psychics/ghosts to learn.

I get that some things just end up naturally a little biased or uneven in some regards, but certain aspects like counterparts not getting the same equal treatment like Beedrill getting a mega, while Butterfree didn't bother me to no end lol.

I always saw the trio as Electabuzz, Magmar, and Scyther.
Though in hindsight Jynx makes more sense as the third wheel
