Any game with a story is theoretically a hallway. There may be some forks, or the hallway may turn in different directions to another hallway, but its still a hallway all the same.

For the most part it isn't the game being shitty, it's you gaining more experience as an older player and expecting more. Their games are tried and true, people still love this style. Pokemon has ALWAYS been a hallway?

To break TRUE linearity and hallways is to remove or have as little story as possible. With maybe some encounters of various RNG based events. Example: You can begin as a trainer in x town, you get x pokemon to begin your journey. You are then thrown into a world based on real time where if you are not fast enough, you may miss seeing specific things in the main story but do not have to be there for the story to continue without you. At some point, you will have to confront SOME obstacle, depending on what RNG based event occurred at the beginning of the journey.

Example:
Person A is attacked and has their pokemon stolen. You either 1. follow their story in a sequential manner with SOME parts you can miss or 2. avoid helping them entirely where the plot unfolds without you until you're met with an obstacle due to those events unfolding. So now 20 hours into the game you can't access a facility because you failed to do something crucial, or you now must storm it and rid the place of the bad guys.
