I mostly dislike the anime but I've watched a good amount of episodes from each generation and I agree with this.

This is another thing I hated about memefrog. Ash just left him behind, shaking hands and saying "Let's meet again" with a smug look his face. It was like he felt nothing release the Pokemon he was so close to. Same for memefrong. Even he didn't show much emotions. Even Butterfree was handled better.

Chimchar was yet another "abused Fire type starter" Pokemon but that made it all the more cathartic when it was able to beat the trainer that abused it. Couple that with Ash helping it cope with its dangerous Blaze state and you have an incredibly strong bond.
