All we have are how many hits you get on a Google search. Google search has been around for almost 20 years, about as long as Pokemon itself. If you're using this list to determine popularity, you have to take into account how long it's been since a starter's reveal, as you would almost immediately get hits online.

The gen 1 starter's results mean nothing, they've been around the longest. This means that Litten, becoming functionally number one on this list in under a year, is the most popular Pokemon.

I think they all are neat, though Emboar was the one I got the most disappointed with during Gen 5 design-wise.

Others might be more acceptable due to nostalgia that occurs at times lol.

Game Freak could of done things really different with most of the starters, hence some of the Megas did things their base formes wish they already were to begin with Gen 1 and 3 starters). Serperior wish it was Grass/Dragon or at the very least just Grass/Poison cus is a snake and snakes are venomous etc.

Lots of things to nitpick, but I still think most of the starters are solid.

Only starters that ever disappointed me regarding stats were Decidueye, Incineroar, Emboar and Serperior, the first pair being slow, while the latter where (Emboar) just massive HP and attack with wasted sp atk when its defenses should of been covered better. Serperior got just 75 base atk and sp atk... the same as Bellsprout and Oddish.

I'm still impressed by the Greninja success story. I remember seeing all Gens go by and thinking we would never get a Starter nearly as popular as the original 3 are. But then came Greninja and was the biggest hit i've seen in nearly 20 years and proving me wrong. I was even more impressed because we got a starter that became exceedingly popular so far into the franchise. Greninja kinda became "that one new cool starter" in the eyes of most normies i've seen, which surprises me because i never thought they'd say something like that considering how die-hard Genwunners most of them are. You need to land everything in an absolutely perfect way to get through such a dense viewpoint, and Greninja managed it. It's great. Kinda made me realize that the franchise still has lots of staying power.
