The battling gimmick will be synchro-attacks. Gen 8 was heavily focused on double battles, so they added a gimmick exclusive to double battles. Here's how it works:
>new option in battle menu to pull off synchor-attacks
>synchro-attacks have really high base power (calculated by the 2 move's base powers added together *1.5), but take up both pokemon's turns
>they have dual-typings based on the moves selected
>all secondary effects have a 100% chance of occuring
>if 1 status move is selected along with 1 damaging move, then the move's power is increased by 1.5, and doubles the stats gained
>if two status moves are selected, the stats gained are tripled
>synhcro-attacks don't work with moves that only inflict status
>only 1 synchro-attack per battle

following the trend of remaking games, the gen 6 remake was actually pokemon Z. charizard and mewtwo got new Z evolutions, which were focused on mixed attacking. greninja didn't get much added attention, other than being able to battle Ash, who gives you his battle-bond greninja after the battle. Zygarde finally got some plot relevance in this game, so that's a nice touch.

Su/mo didn't get sequels, but they did get pokemon Stars, which focused on Necrozma and the main legendaries more. Marshadow was also a side-legendary catchable in Stars, but I can't remember where

I'd have to say gen 10. It took place in a russian-styled region called Vorzodit (based on the russian word for rebirth/reborn, can't tell you why ;)). It introduced some neat pokemon, and made ice types a lot better by removing their rock and steel weaknesses and making some of them bulkier.
