I understand the point of them, that is to introduce the types that were added to after gen 1 to more pokemon from kanto (like they did with magnamite, clafable, etc ) and I love most of the alolan forms, especially Persian. But they should have had more, I love the idea of breathing new life in older pokemon. It's a shame alolan mons are a one time gimmick.

Exeggutor set forth the idea that Alolan pokemon were gonna be fixed/revamped old pokemon with biology redesigned to the idea that they're a hardened species to survive a Hawaiian environment that is separated from most of the main world.

Instead we got two ice types of pokemon that would have been able to handle Alola's heat, a Muk with no discernible reason for being different, Garfield, Fabio, and a jihad. Gonna play the devil's advocate here:

Diglett/Dugtrio are based on Pale's Hair, a type of volcanic glass found on lava flows in Hawaii. No idea why it's ground/steel instead of ground/fire, though.

Machop evo line didn't get anything, would have been cool with Hawaiian tattoos and a lay for machamp

The worst. Got fucked up. I expected slow, but not lower attack... Hidden ability is shit, was expecting Adaptability to fire off dem nice double priority. But alas, these are the only ones that are as bad if not worse than the originals.

Ability is kinda stupid, but it is technically an upgrade to regular Raichu. Even if a small one.
>Sandshrew/Sandslash
Even if they don't seem to be so, they're upgrades too. Way more resistances, plus they're the best Slush Rush users and actually work really well with most Hail setters thanks to key resistances. But in the end they work to similarly to the originals, basically being rapid spinners who try to abuse weather.
>Vulpix/Ninetales
Probably the best Alolan formes. Great speed, decent typing, great movepool, good hidden ability. Decent concept as well. Probably my favorites too.
>Diglett/Dugtrio
Stupid designs, and worse than their counterparts because of lack of Arena Trap. However, apart from that one ability, they're better in every way. These work like an UU Excadrill, which is nice. Too bad for the unfunny design.
>Meowth/Persian
Weird design choices but nice upgrades. Technician special attacker is great for in-game, and Fur Coat is great for competitive. They basically work like Liepard except more defensively. It's an interesting gimmick for such an underlooked mon.
>Geodude/Graveler/Golem
Interesting choice for a typing, 3 good abilities which means versatility and unpredictability which is always nice. Still slow tho. The cannon thing looks weird but I still like it. Overall a nice upgrade for such a classic mon that had a great downfall over the years.
>Grimer/Muk
A small upgrade that does more than enough to shoot it to decent viability. Good typing and great design.
>Exeggutor
The upgrade we all secretly wanted it to have. Solid.
>Marowak
The upgrade it needed and, more importantly, deserved. Fits it so nicely. A bit edgy tho. Great typing, and Lightningrod works great on it.

Personally wanted Alolan Magikarp and Zubat

If the goal was to make some recognizable Gen1s new again, those two feel the most worn out to me.

SM gives us a new gimmick involving more new forms for pokemon, and only bothers to deliver 16, mostly turds. Ratata line was referencing along with yungoose's line how mongooses were brought in to kill rats, but since one is diurnal and the other is nocturnal, they turned into a double rape shift for the native wildlife.
Alolan dug trio was partially a joke, but it is a volcanic phenomena called Pele's hair, where volcanic glass that looks like hair is created and gets caught on objects like mounds due to updrafts. The dex entries are even basically ripped from the local lore about the volcano goddess the phenomena is named after.

The only one I'm legitimately confused about is Electric Golem. Making it Ground/Fire with a fire type version of its new ability would have been much more useful, since there are fewer immunities to fire (flash fire) than for Electric. A really neat idea in concept, but in practice it was just used by GF to create more Ice, Dark, Psychic and Steel types, since those are underrepresented in the actually new batch of monsters. I think that's by none of the Alolan variants really feel very creative except maybe exeggutor and Marowak.

Also, really dull color pallets. These are supposed to be the evolutionary offshoots of a colorful tropical region but everything is white, brown, or dark.

Sandslash, Marowak and Ninetails are what all Alola forms should have been: complete, drastic changes to typing.
