I legitimately liked him in the game. He just wanted to have fun, but had some serious undertones (such as when Gladion pointed out he was only using the "fun" aspect as a coverup for his own ineptitude) and acknowledged when he fucked up. Plus after Serena and Wally that made you feel like asshole of the century, he didn't make me feel bad winning which was seriously a breath of fresh air. He's my favorite rival of all time, honestly.

I feel like Hau is almost a parody of that. He gives you shit and heals your Pokémon constantly, stops you almost every screen just to go "MALASADAS!!! LOL!!!" and in general does nothing of import.

I liked him because he's probably the best take on a bro friend rival in the series.

When you're with him he just wants to have fun - battle, eat, help you out. But by the end of your journey he does have frustrations with how he can't compete with you. But he doesn't let those frustrations get him down or get in the way of your friendship, he sees it as a challenge, and something to surpass.

Hau is a sweetheart and I love him.

I dunno why people think that every other word he says is malasada. He'll mention them once or twice, but it's not like his entire fucking personality revolves around them. The times where he DOESN'T mention them outweigh the moments where he does. At least he isn't constantly mentioning his smell fetish, or constantly calling your pokemon weak moments after losing to them.

Holy fuck do I hate her. Hau at least has a personality and appeared as many times as any other rival. People who hate him are just pissed that they didn't get another asshole rival they can take their anger out on.

Maybe I'm just too laid back about these things, but I liked pretty much all of the characters in SM to some degree. None of them were the disappointments we were subjected to in XY.

Hau's character arc is him holding back because that way he can just tell himself "it's okay I lost, because I wasn't really trying anyway". He's weighed down by the pressure of having his grandpa being a kahuna, and his father left for pretty much that same reason.

He's actually a good character concept, but my two problems with him are:

1. The bad dialogue he's given, basically the DUDE MALASADAS LMAO meme. It's obviously not as egregious as the meme implies, but it's still pretty annoying.

2. His in-game team doesn't change up enough to show that he's really removed his mental block to me. That or the game's implying he really does have no talent whatsoever.

This was a problem. He peaks at the battle after you first visit the Aether Facility when he gets his Raichu and he actually puts up a decent fight at that stage. But then the only thing he adds to his team before the post game is a Komola and even that comes late.

I agree with you anon. I either liked most of the characters or just thought they were OK. The only character I was disappointed in was Guzma, and I think that's because pre-release /vp/ built him up into something he's not.

I couldn't agree more with this. Hau's shitty incomplete team is really holding him back. Like even in fucking BW1 Cheren has a post game team with 6 full mons with interesting items slapped on them.
I don't really dislike Hau as a character that much, but I do as a rival simply because he doesn't give me any challenge. Gladion doesnt either for that matter.
