I fucking LOVED this theme, it felt like a flavored blend of the main handheld games and stuff like XD, Pokemon Battle Revolution, etc.

I know that, as gym leaders, the theme and general feel of the battles should be retained throughout every region, but overall I don't think there was a single track in XY I didn't like, and I'm not upset at all that this was the gym theme.

Gotta admit that when the song suddenly turned into a really happy-sounding remix of the trial theme, it took me a bit by surprise. But then I really got into it. I don't know why people seem to think that battle themes necessarily have to be dramatic or anything regardless of context. It's not like the Kahunas are trying to kill you. It's the Trial Goer's chance to show what they learned in the island before moving on to the next one. It's fine for it to be a fun and maybe even heartwarming callback to the trial theme.

They're the strongest trainers in Alola. You do realize that they're not going all out, right? The Island Trial is not the same thing as the Pokemon League. The objective is for the Trial Goer to learn and become an adult, not filter out the weak. Kahunas are imposing figures, but it's still a friendly match and generally a happy occasion. No, they're not. I could maybe understand if you said Gladion was, but Hau? No.
Regular trainer battles, Wild Mon battles, Llima, etc are all battles that don't need to be epic or intense. They're just battles. But why would I want to hear unfitting music, ESPECIALLY that happy stuff, for something like a Kahuna battle where my ability to progress on my challenge is tested? For stuff like Ultra Beasts, vs Lusamine, etc, it does not fit. It does not help capture the intensity of a moment, especially when their character is not defined by happiness. And no, you don't need Ghetsis-tier music for something to be "epic". Guzma and Lusamine's are both epic / intense and capture the theme of their characters. The Kahuna theme just fails at this.

The Kahunas aren't obstacles. They're guides. The trial is a ritual and they're just there to make sure that you've learned everything there is to learn in their island so that you can move on. They're definitely friendly battles.
