-Vensaur is better than Blastoise due to the crit mechanics in gen 1. Blastoise does have better coverage though.

-All Shinnoh starters are pretty good. Although Empoleon is the most reliant on TMs despite hitting like a truck.

Delphox is easy mode in game, fire + psychic wrecks half of the gyms and all of Team Flare's generic poison types. Greninja doesn't even get a good dark or ice move until after the 8th gym, which fucks it over for most of the game.

Its learnset and movepool both suck in GSC though. Level up gives it Bite and Hydro Pump, while TMs give it Ice Punch and Surf, which are all special. Typhlosion isn't much better, but at least it gets special attacks to take advantage of its best stat.

Sceptile is way worse than Swampert. Sceptile isn't that good against most bosses until the lategame, while Marshtomp and Swampert have literally one weakness that has no specialist and the bulk to match. Sceptile improved a lot in the remakes, though.

Samurott is probably the best in Unova too. Good Grass and Fire types are easy to come by, while Water is strangely rarer. Emboar is best if you want to speed run though, but ordinarily perhaps not so much.

Also, Chimchar is definitely the best for Sinnoh. That mixed offensive wide movepool high speed shit is really handy, especially with how rare Fire yet useful Fire is in Sinnoh. Torterra is pretty damn great too, but has issues lategame, such as with the Ice areas.

Well, in my case anyway, I do prefer Bulbasaur but Charmander is a close second. Blaziken is always and forever my favorite Hoenn starter as well, so it's not like I don't have a popular one as my favorite.
