Burn Up

>Move is really good
It can only be used once, and it kills your ability to get STAB on other moves after it has been used. The only pokemon that get it aren't very tanky, so they gain nothing from losing the fire typing.

How does it work with Protean?

Can you use Burn Up, lose your Fire type, then use Burn Up again, Protean gives you a Fire type for you to lose?

It's definitely no longer weak to Ground-type, and possibly can also be burned.

It means it loses all weaknesses/resistances and always take normal damage. No STAB on any move.
Some wierd shit probably happens when it interacts with other abilities

You can't use Burn Up without being Fire type.
It's a one-time use move unless you get fire type again somehow

Ah fuck. That seriously puts a hamper on that plan. I mean, I guess I could use another Fire move with Protean to regain Fire typing but then it kinda defeats the point, and I doubt my opponent will let my arcanine live that long after the first Burn Up.

I'll just stick to my Protean physical Arcanine then.

That was changed in gen V. IIRC they also removed the ??? type, which was why they changed it and also why they made Curse a Ghost move.

?????? what are you talking about, Burn Up Arcanine is one of the most common moves on the special set in VGC

For whatever reason the battle tree AI doesn't seem to know to stop using the move after it loses the fire type, so it's basically a free kill if it uses an arcanine with it that wants to use fire moves on you. Otherwise I like the idea of the move, but there's just not a lot of ways I can imagine getting enough use out of it

I guess it would be kind of neat to use on the ass end of a fight if there aren't any ghosts left, but that seems so incredibly cock-blocked by alolan marowak which also happens to be incredibly common. Since you're already benefiting from intimidate (I assume anyway) wouldn't you be better off with another coverage move over willy wisp? Also did you mean careful instead of bold?

This is basically the old Bulky Arcanine set with overheat swapped for Burn Up. Even Overheat was just to be used once so you could do one massive attack. Arcanine doesn't mind the stat drop. It just wants to tank shit, heal up, spread burns, and pick things off with Extreme Speed.

I use Firinium-Z on my Arcanine though. Inferno Overdrive off Burn Up pretty much deletes whatever doesn't resist it.

By the way, would the earlier mentioned Protean/Skill Swap tactic work with Inferno Overdrive? As in, you first use Burn Up, then the turn after you Z-Move Burn Up into Inferno Overdrive. Would Protean give you the Fire type back off the Z-move?

What would those even involve?

Does the type change persist on switch? Timid Moltres with Burn Up and U-Turn with two filler moves sounds like it could work pretty well.
