It's still possible, given the unused walking animations and the sheer amount of times NPCs talk about the first Pokemon in your party as if it were standing out in the open. I'm sure we'll get an interview in 5 years where Matsuda casually mentions it or something.

I never thought of this. I mean it made sense but it didn't at the same time. Maybe it was supposed to be a thing in SM after all.
